Seasonal Coffee Drinks vs. Regular Flavored Coffee

Seasonal Coffee Drinks vs. Regular Flavored Coffee - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Seasonal Coffee Drinks vs. Regular Flavored Coffee: Nutrition Well, holiday beverages at places like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, they can be just as bad for you as a lot of the other lattes and beverages you find at those places. So, just like any other time of the year, you want to be real careful of those drinks. For example, the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice latte, the grande has about 400 calories, 17 grams of fat, and 48 grams of sugar. So, to cut that back, the first thing you can do is always to cut down the size. You could order the tall size, which is 12 ounces. Then, to cut out the fat, because the ingredients in that are espresso, steamed milk, whole milk, unless you ask for skim milk, whipped cream, and then a pumpkin flavored syrup, and then pumpkin spices. So to cut back, you could order it with steamed milk and skip the whipped cream. That would take all of the fat out of it. And by having, also cutting back the size, you would cut the calories in half. There's really not a great way to cut back on sugar, 'cause they don't use sugar free syrups for flavoring. But by cutting down the size, you can cut that from 48 grams of sugar, down to 37 grams of sugar. And these sorts of guidelines, like ordering it made with skim milk, getting a smaller size, skipping the whipped cream. That'll help cut back the calories in any of those coffee drinks year round.

Coffee Calories

!±8± Coffee Calories

Coffee drinking enthusiasts who have done the research will be well aware already of the calorie content of their favorite beverage. Coffee calories are a hidden piece of nutritional information for most who casually sip a cup or two a day. An influx in the specialty coffee market - much of which was based on drinks with excessive amounts of sugar and fat - has led consumers to a wealth of nutritional information not previously at their disposal. The major coffee chains are being directed towards healthier options due to the changing nature of the coffee drinker and an increased awareness of coffee calories. The caloric content of a coffee drink varies greatly based on the ingredients and the processes through which the beverage is made. Consumers desiring a generic reference for coffee calories in an attempt to drink smarter can keep in mind a few basic principles that can trim the fat and sugar in a drink or, conversely, turn an otherwise harmful coffee into a gut-busting breakfast substitute.

Cream or Skim

One of the main culprits in fat and calorie content in a coffee or specialty coffee is the dairy portion. Due to the drink's nature to be somewhat bitter in taste, coffee is often mixed with cream and sugar or artificial sweeteners. Using low-fat or non-fat milk is a great way to mellow out a bitter coffee without adding on calories. A tablespoon of skim milk contains only 5 calories, making it the ideal mixer for a healthier coffee. For those wanting something heavier but still watching their calories, fat free half and half - coming in at 10 calories per tablespoon - is a good starting point. Soy milk has only about 6 calories in each tablespoon, and soy creamer will hover around 15 calories for the same amount. Soy is a great option for any coffee drinkers who have trouble with dairy. Drinks mixed with whipped cream are going to be heavier in calories than those with no topping, so consumers can ask for the beverage without whipped cream to lighten the load.

Sweeteners and Size

The specialty drinks synonymous with some of the more prominent national coffee shops have been a major contributor to the inflated coffee calorie count burdening consumers. It is not uncommon for one of these specialty drinks - in truth much closer to a milkshake than a coffee - to be mixed with flavored syrup and topped with the aforementioned whipped cream. Skipping the syrup in a specialty drink can cut as much as 200 calories, while requesting a drink with no whipped cream can shave off 120. Basically, for the casual coffee drinker, the things that seem like they would be responsible for a jump in caloric content are usually the main contributors.

Aside from the sugar additives and the fatty dairy toppings, few things are as effective in reducing caloric content as ordering a smaller size. Portion control is necessary to eating and drinking healthily, and coffee drinks are no exception. Reducing the portion size of a coffee order from 16 ounces to 12 ounces can produce similar effects to leaving out the sugary syrup or whipped cream. If the consumer is insistent on the sugar or cream, ordering a smaller size can ease the caloric weight of a beverage.

Make Your Own Flavored Yogurts and Yogurt Products

!±8± Make Your Own Flavored Yogurts and Yogurt Products

Yogurt can be a part of a healthy diet, but how do you know what else you are getting in your flavorful yogurt and yogurt drinks when you buy them pre-flavored? You can start with the ingredients list, and usually that list includes High fructose corn syrup, which is a toxic sugar. You should not consume this ingredient and should do as much as you can to remove it from your diet. It is difficult because it seems to be in almost everything. Well, you can avoid it in many things if you get off the "convenience train" and take some minor effort to put your own ingredients together. Many people do not realize how easy it is to flavor their own yogurt and yogurt drinks. I will take a quick aside here to say that you can buy plain unsweetened yogurt as well as plain unsweetened kefir (a thinner yogurt like drink with many times the healthful properties and beneficial bacterial cultures and friendly yeasts than in regular old yogurt), or unsalted buttermilk, and you can mix in whatever you want.

You can use fresh fruit and a natural non-sugar sweetener like Stevia, or a five carbon sugar, which does not get metabolized like regular sugar, in the form of Xylitol. (xylitol can be fatal to dogs but is quite safe for humans, in the same way that birds can eat berries that are toxic to humans) You can use real cane sugar as well, which is not the same as high fructose corn syrup. Volumes have been written on this elsewhere, but search it out if you must. My point is that you can use frozen fruit, or other organic and healthier fruit alternatives to sweeten your own yogurt or cultured milk drink.

If you are using a natural corn syrup free fruit spread, or pie filling, you can just stir it in. Another tasty option is to use Goya brand fruit nectars, which as of this writing are made with real cane sugar, and mix them into your drink. My son loves Goya mango nectar mixed into buttermilk, which makes a tasty Indian style "Mango Lasse" type of drink. It is sweet and refreshing, and without the chemicals. You can make mango and other exotic flavor yogurts which you cannot find in the grocery store. Your options are almost limitless in this regard, and you are better off. You can buy the best quality yogurt in the 1 quart or 1 liter tubs, and simply fruit them up as you wish, either the entire container or in small serving batches at the time of serving, by simply mixing in your desired flavor or fruit with or without sweetener in the serving bowl. If you are using frozen fruit, like frozen berries bought by the bag, then you can use a blender, although cleanup will be a bit more. If you wait until the frozen berries thaw, you can stir them in because they will be soft enough to smash with a spoon.

I hope that this short article has given you some useful ideas to not only eliminate some harmful chemicals from your diet, but also to add some healthy cultured dairy products into your daily diet. Your body will thank you many times over.
